Music has a unique way of reminding us who we are, especially during seasons when we may feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or disconnected from ourselves. As a music therapist, I often see how the right song can help someone put words to an experience, shift their perspective, reconnect with their strengths, or simply feel less alone.
Empowerment doesn't always mean feeling confident or fearless. Sometimes, empowerment means accepting who we are, recognizing how far we've come, allowing ourselves to grow, or choosing to keep going even when things are difficult.
Here are 15 songs that can be powerful tools for reflection, connection, and empowerment.

1. "Video" — India.Arie
"Video" is a beautiful reminder that our worth doesn't come from meeting someone else's expectations. India.Arie celebrates authenticity, self-acceptance, and being comfortable in your own skin. This song can encourage us to reflect on the messages we have received about who we're "supposed" to be and give ourselves permission to embrace who we actually are.
2. "Unwritten" — Natasha Bedingfield
"Unwritten" reminds us that our story isn't finished. There are still choices to make, experiences to have, and possibilities ahead. This can be especially empowering when someone feels stuck or defined by their past. The song invites us to recognize that the next chapter is still ours to write.
3. "Ordinary" — Alex Warren
"Ordinary" celebrates the extraordinary meaning that can exist within everyday life and relationships. Empowerment isn't always about accomplishing something huge; sometimes it's about recognizing the value in the people, moments, and connections that make our lives meaningful. This song encourages us to appreciate the beauty in what might otherwise feel ordinary.
4. "High Hopes" — Panic! at the Disco
"High Hopes" is all about believing that something more is possible and continuing to pursue it. The song can be used to explore dreams, goals, perseverance, and the belief that our circumstances don't have to determine our future. It can provide an opportunity to identify personal goals and celebrate the steps, big and small, we take toward them.
5. "Best Day of My Life" — American Authors
"Best Day of My Life" brings an energetic sense of optimism and possibility. Its upbeat sound can help shift the emotional atmosphere and encourage us to focus on positive experiences. Empowerment can sometimes begin with simply allowing ourselves to experience joy, celebrate the present moment, and look forward to what's next.
6. "Yellow" — Coldplay
"Yellow" offers a different kind of empowerment: the power of being valued and loved. The song can create space to reflect on the people who make us feel seen, supported, and important. In a therapeutic setting, it can open conversations about connection, belonging, gratitude, and recognizing our own worth through the eyes of those who care about us.
7. "A Symptom of Being Human" — Shinedown
"A Symptom of Being Human" reminds us that struggling, making mistakes, feeling overwhelmed, and not always having everything figured out are all part of being human. This song can be particularly powerful for reducing shame and encouraging self-compassion. Empowerment doesn't require perfection, it can come from accepting ourselves exactly where we are.
8. "I Just Wanna Shine" — Fitz and the Tantrums
"I Just Wanna Shine" encourages us to embrace positivity and let ourselves be seen. The bright, energetic quality of the song can help create a sense of confidence and motivation. It reminds us that we don't have to wait until everything is perfect to celebrate ourselves and bring our own light into the world.
9. "Breathe" — Lo Spirit
"Breathe" speaks to the importance of slowing down and giving ourselves permission to simply exist in the moment. When life feels overwhelming, empowerment may look less like pushing harder and more like recognizing when we need to pause. In music therapy, a song like this can support emotional regulation, mindfulness, and the reminder that taking a breath is sometimes the first step toward moving forward.
10. "Rise Up" — Andra Day
"Rise Up" is a powerful anthem of resilience. It acknowledges that life can be difficult while emphasizing the strength we can find to keep moving forward. This song can support reflection on personal challenges, perseverance, and the people who have helped us along the way. Sometimes empowerment is simply saying, "I may be tired, but I am still here."
11. "Survivor" — Destiny's Child
"Survivor" embraces strength, independence, and resilience after adversity. Its confident message can help individuals reflect on challenges they have overcome and recognize their own capacity to move forward. This song can be an excellent starting point for identifying personal strengths and celebrating survival, not just of difficult circumstances, but of difficult seasons.
12. "Learn to Let Go" — Kesha
"Learn to Let Go" explores the freedom that can come from releasing the things we cannot change. Whether it's past mistakes, painful experiences, expectations, or old versions of ourselves, holding on can keep us from moving forward. This song encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance while reminding us that our past can be part of our story without controlling our future.
13. "Stand by You" — Rachel Platten
"Stand by You" highlights the power of supportive relationships. Empowerment doesn't always mean doing everything independently. Sometimes, our strength comes from knowing that someone is willing to stand beside us when things get hard. This song can open conversations about friendship, support systems, trust, and how we can be a source of encouragement for others.
14. "Hold On" — Alabama Shakes
"Hold On" captures the experience of struggling while continuing to find reasons to keep going. Its raw, soulful sound can make space for complicated emotions rather than insisting that everything is okay. This is an important part of empowerment: acknowledging that life can be hard while still believing that we have the ability to make it through.
15. "Kim Smoltz" — Ween
"Kim Smoltz" offers a more unexpected kind of empowerment. Unlike many traditional empowerment anthems, this song isn't necessarily about confidence or overcoming adversity. Its quirky, unconventional quality can remind us that empowerment can also mean embracing individuality, humor, creativity, and the freedom to be a little different. Sometimes being empowered means giving ourselves permission to enjoy what we enjoy without worrying about whether it makes sense to everyone else.
The Power of an Empowerment Playlist
One of the things I love about using music in therapy is that empowerment doesn't have to sound the same for everyone. One person may need a bold anthem like "Survivor," while someone else may need the gentle reminder to "Breathe." Another person may connect most deeply with a song about being accepted, letting go, finding hope, or simply enjoying the moment.
As music therapists, we can use these songs intentionally, not just to listen, but to create opportunities for reflection, movement, discussion, songwriting, singing, emotional expression, and connection.
Ultimately, empowerment is about recognizing that our voices matter, our experiences matter, and our stories are still being written. Sometimes, a song can help us remember that when we need the reminder most.
