Sample Music Therapy Goals for Brain Injury Clients

We individualize each plan.

Goals may include:

Cognitive and Communication

  • Increase sustained attention during structured musical tasks for 5+ minutes

  • Improve short-term memory recall using familiar songs and rhythm exercises

  • Initiate verbal or nonverbal communication through singing or instrument play

  • Use rhythmic cuing to support word-finding and speech fluency

Motor and Sensorimotor

  • Improve fine and gross motor coordination by engaging in instrument-based movement (e.g., drumming, shaker play, guitar strumming)

  • Practice motor planning and sequencing through rhythmic entrainment activities

Emotional and Behavioral

  • Identify and express emotions through songwriting or musical storytelling

  • Use music-assisted relaxation to reduce agitation or restlessness

  • Rehearse coping strategies for overstimulation (e.g., deep breathing to calming music)

Social and Relational

  • Increase positive interactions with peers or caregivers through group music-making

  • Participate in turn-taking or shared attention activities in music sessions

  • Build self-confidence and identity through meaningful musical choices
